Fairest

By Mimi Largier , May 2008

Fairest (by Gail Carson Levine) is a very entertaining book. When I read it I couldn’t put it down. The main character’s name is Aza and her biggest worry is that she’s ugly. In her world pretty means thin, blond hair, and petite. Aza is the opposite and even though in this time and day she would be beautiful then she is hideous. Aza does have a beautiful voice and for that she is admired. Aza discovers a new type of singing called allusing, which makes her able to make other things seem like they sing. When she makes friends with a Duchess and goes to the palace as her companion Aza meets the royal family, makes friends with the Prince and becomes the Lady in Waiting for the new Queen. Now Aza has to learn to become dainty a professional. When the people of Ayortha find her allusing for the queen what will they do and will she be able to stand their tyranny.

I think that everybody that likes a mixture between fantasy and fairy tales will like this exciting book. The story line is good and Gail Carson Levine makes it even better by her amazing writing.

“DrillBit Taylor” Lots of laughs

By David Elder , April 2008

If you like comedy, action, and adventure, “DrillBit Taylor” is for you. It’s about three ninth graders named Ryan, Wade and Emmit. They attend their first day at high school and meet up with Filkins, the school bully. The bully beats them up so they hire a bodyguard. All the bodyguards they talk to are too expensive, so they end up with a homeless man named DrillBit Taylor (played by Owen Wilson) to be their bodyguard.

I like this movie because it has lots of action with a little comedy. It also is a story that pulls you in, and it is situation that students may encounter in daily life. .
